How to learn new words: 6 tips from our teachers
Topics and phrases, context, spaced repetition, your own Quizlet sets — how to make new vocabulary less scary.
New vocabulary is probably what scares students most. But once you find your own way of learning words, they stop feeling so scary. Here are a few tips from our teachers.
1. Learn words by topic and as phrases
For example, not just get up but get up early.
2. Use them in context
Make up your own sentences or stories to help the words stick. For example, the word delicious: My mom cooks delicious cakes.
3. Use spaced repetition
The most effective way is to review words from the very first topic to the latest one.
4. Move words from passive to active
Write the words you’d like to use in conversation on a sticky note and try to use them in your next lesson.
5. Make your own Quizlet sets
Collect words that were new to you in a video, a book or TikTok comments. You’ll grow your vocabulary and can check your own mini-dictionary any time.
6. For younger learners: cards, songs and games
Bright flashcards, songs and games help children remember words best.
